The Yamaha CL 8 mm Feeder is the workhorse small-component feeder of the Yamaha CL ("Compact Loader") platform — the format that supplies the bulk of the small SMD passives on every populated Yamaha YV- or YG-class machine. It accepts 8 mm-wide carrier tape and is available in two pitch variants:

  • 8×2 mm — advances the tape 2 mm per cycle, for 0201 and 0402 chip resistors, capacitors, small diodes, and the tiniest LEDs that ship at 2 mm pitch
  • 8×4 mm — advances the tape 4 mm per cycle, for 0603, 0805, 1206 passives, SOT-23, SOT-323, MELFs, small diodes, and LED packages such as 3014 and 3528

The two pitch variants are not interchangeable — the sprocket teeth and indexing pawl are physically matched to the carrier tape's drive-hole spacing — and a populated machine will normally carry a mix of both.

Mechanically, the feeder is a purely pneumatic-mechanical unit: a ratcheted sprocket engages the drive-holes of the carrier tape, a pneumatic cylinder driven by the host machine's compressed air actuates the indexing pawl on every pick cycle, and the spent cover tape is peeled off and wound onto an integrated take-up reel. There is no motor, no electronics, and no comms cable — only the mechanical mount and the standard CL pneumatic interface to the machine. This minimalism is the reason the CL 8 mm remains in heavy service decades after its introduction: low cost per slot, simple maintenance, and immunity to electrical/firmware faults.

The feeder accepts reels up to 15″ / 382 mm in diameter and is compatible with the entire legacy Yamaha YV/YG range, plus Philips/Assembleon machines using the same CL bank standard. It occupies one slot on the feeder bank, making it the densest format Yamaha CL offers and the default choice for maximizing part-number capacity. Original Yamaha units carry KW1-M1xxx part numbers; the 0201-specific 8×2 mm version is most easily identified by its green handle. Both original Yamaha and high-quality compatible/clone versions are widely stocked, and the two are generally interchangeable in service. The most common wear items are the press cover, the bird-beak/pawl assembly, the sprocket gear, and the take-up reel mechanism.
