The Yamaha CL 8×2 mm Pneumatic Feeder is the smallest-pitch variant of the Yamaha CL ("Compact Loader") feeder family — purpose-built for placing the tiniest standard SMD passive components on Yamaha and Philips/Assembleon pick-and-place machines. The "8×2" designation describes the feeder's two key dimensions: it accepts 8 mm-wide carrier tape, and on every placement cycle it advances the tape by exactly 2 mm, which is the standard component-to-component spacing used in tape packaging of the smallest chip sizes.
The 8×2 mm CL is the go-to feeder for the smallest chip-resistor and chip-capacitor packages — the parts that come reeled at 2 mm pitch in 8 mm tape:
For larger packages (0603, 0805, 1206, SOT-23, etc.) that ship in 8 mm tape at 4 mm pitch, the corresponding feeder is the 8×4 mm CL (KW1-M1100 series) — they are not interchangeable, because the sprocket pitch and indexing mechanism are physically matched to the tape's hole spacing and the component pitch.
Like all CL-platform feeders, the 8×2 mm is a purely mechanical, pneumatically actuated tape feeder — there is no motor and no onboard electronics. A ratcheted sprocket engages the drive-holes in the carrier tape; the placement head triggers a pneumatic cylinder that drives the indexing pawl, advancing the tape one 2 mm step per pick. Cover tape is peeled away and wound onto an integrated take-up reel powered by the same indexing motion. A manual feed button on the body allows operators to step the tape forward during loading and setup. Compressed air is supplied by the host machine's pneumatic system, so the feeder needs only its mechanical mounting and the standard CL air interface — no power, no comms cable.
This pneumatic-mechanical design is what keeps the CL platform attractive even decades after its introduction: low cost per feeder, low maintenance, easy to repair with standard spare parts, and immune to the kinds of electrical/firmware failures that can affect modern motorized feeders.
The feeder supports reels up to 15″ / 382 mm in diameter mounted on its built-in reel holder, with tape thickness up to about 1 mm. The 2 mm-pitch sprocket and the precisely registered pickup window are designed to keep tiny components — particularly 0201, which is barely visible to the naked eye — consistently centered for reliable nozzle pickup, where even small misalignments cause pick errors.
The Yamaha CL 8×2 mm pneumatic feeder is the native 0201/0402 feeder for legacy Yamaha YV- and YG-series machines, including (among others) the YV100II, YV100X, YV100XG, YV180XG, YV88XG, YG100, YG200, and YG300. It is also compatible with Philips/Assembleon machines that share the CL feeder bank standard. Yamaha's newer YS- and YSM-series mounters use the electric SS/ZS/ALF feeder families instead — the CL platform is specific to the older but still very widely deployed generation of Yamaha equipment.
Original Yamaha 8×2 mm CL feeders carry part numbers in the KW1-M1xxx-xxx series, with the specific number indicating the target component size and the revision:
The 0201 variants are frequently identified by a green handle on the feeder body, which is the visual cue operators use to distinguish them at a glance from the larger 4 mm-pitch 8×4 mm feeders on a populated machine bank. Both original Yamaha units and high-quality compatible clones from various SMT-parts specialists are widely available, and the two are generally interchangeable on the machine.
Because the very smallest passives — 0201 and 0402 — typically represent the highest part counts on a modern PCB, a populated Yamaha YV/YG-class machine will usually carry a substantial fraction of its feeder slots dedicated to 8×2 mm CL feeders, with multiple feeders loaded with the most-used resistor and capacitor values. Properly maintained, these feeders give years of reliable service; the most common wear and adjustment points are the press cover (correct closing gap is critical for 0201 reliability), the bird-beak/pawl assembly, the sprocket teeth, and the take-up reel mechanism, all of which are routinely stocked as CL spare parts.
